PHILAUTIA is a celebration of women, trans and non-binary people, of their bodies, of ourselves, and of each other.

This collaborative series is focused on celebrating and loving our Selves and our bodies, and therein celebrating and loving each other. A year into the Covid pandemic, love and connection are awfully hard to feel, both with our bodies and with each other. Relationships between ourselves and our bodies have become taught, and for the past year our bodies have mostly been viewed through the frame of the pandemic and its relationship to it, rather than our personal relationships to our bodies. Covid has meant a loss of connection with each other as well. This project is a celebration of each other, connecting us and building each other up. Philautia encourages us to rekindle that love and connectivity with ourselves, our bodies, and with each other.

Philautia is also a celebration of body autonomy. Each of our bodies is our body alone, not anyone else’s. We are constantly stripped of our body autonomy. These photos are a celebration of our exclusive ownership over our own bodies, a defiant reclamation of our bodies, an assertion of our power and glory.

The series is a collaborative project, open to all women, trans and non-binary huns all over the world. Everyone is encouraged to wear (or not wear!) whatever best represents to them a celebration of their body. You can take self-portraits, send photos you have previously taken or have new photos taken by me over FaceTime. Submissions can be named and tagged or anonymous. You can show your face or choose not to. It's whatever YOU want.

You are beautiful. Your body is beautiful. All bodies are incredible. Let's celebrate each other. It's so important to raise each other up during these times, and to shower ourselves and each other with love.

"We are merely passengers in this body; a vehicle we use and keep well so that we are able to help others. That is all.

"Gender is just a convenient title we use. It's not necessary at the end of the day."

"Before lockdown began I was depressed, underweight and grieving. I had quit my job and had taken time off. So I didn’t feel afraid when the lockdown was announced as I couldn’t think about or feel much and wasn’t planning to go out anyway. I shaved my head. And gained more weight than I’d realised. And by late spring I didn’t recognise myself and felt genderless. My sister helped me take these garden nudes to remind me who I was and to feel ... sexy!! Now, almost a year later I feel like I am mountains better than I was and I feel myself. These new photos remind me who I am and how far I’ve come.."

NINA @ninamariallmoslechner "I have always had difficulties in accepting my body, since ever, really. It’s still a long journey, but I am taking it day by day, because I know that we all deserve to celebrate and embrace ourselves - cause that’s we deserve."

JULIET "Since the end of last summer, I've been trying to separate my sense of my body from outside perspectives of it. One of the best parts of this was realising how much I love not shaving my armpits. This is the first time I've ever had hair there, as I've spent my whole life doing all sorts of weird stuff to keep them bare!!!"

ALICE. "I have a complex relationship with my body. My skin and bones and everything in between, they don’t always feel like mine, or feel like they should. Today I choose to love my body, for its strength and softness, for its beauty and complexity, and tomorrow I will wake up and try to do the same."

"I love nail polish and i've been told my toes are ugly and my feet too big and all that.. I can't say my feet/toes are the epitome of beauty (whatever that is, and who sets that anyway other than men who fetishize feet?!?!) anyway I'm sitting naked in my living room painting my nails and toes and singing down with the patriarchy!"
